Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tributes to Indira Gandhi on her 102nd birth commemoration. Gandhi was the Prime Minister between 1966 and 1977 and afterward between 1980 and 1984. She was born on this day in 1917 in Allahabad. “Tributes to our former PM Indira Gandhi Ji on her birth anniversary,” Modi wrote on Twitter.

Top Congress pioneers, including Chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, paid tribute to Indira Gandhi here on her 102nd birth commemoration. Former President Pranab Mukherjee, ex-vice president Hamid Ansari, Congress pioneers, MPs and party specialists too paid floral tributes to the Former Prime Minister at Shakti Sthal, her commemoration.

“On her birth anniversary we pay homage to India’s first female Prime Minister, the Late Smt Indira Gandhi. Her will and determination led our country to great heights,” the Congress said in the official tweet. “Her contributions to India’s national security, economy and foreign policy will always be cherished,” the party said.

Rahul Gandhi said the former Prime Minister played a critical part in setting up India as a strong nation. “Blessed with a strong, capable leadership and amazing management ability, Iron lady who played a key role in establishing India as a strong country and my beloved grandmother late Mrs Indira Gandhi. My tributes to her on her birth anniversary,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, former Union minister Jairam Ramesh, Milind Deora and Kumari Selja were among the senior party leaders who paid tributes to the former prime minister on Twitter. “Charismatic, Courageous, Consequential and also Controversial. But her legacy, as the only PM for whom environmental protection was of paramount importance, is indisputable,” Ramesh said in a tweet.

Congress Chief Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh, Milind Deora and Kumari Selja were among the senior party pioneers who paid tributes to the Former Prime Minister on Twitter. “Charismatic, Courageous, Consequential and also Controversial. But her legacy, as the only PM for whom environmental protection was of paramount importance, is indisputable,” Ramesh expressed in a tweet.

 “Today we honour the incredible will & sacrifice of India’s first female PM, Indira Gandhi. As PM, Mrs Gandhi made immense contributions to our nation’s national security, economy, democracy & foreign policy. She will always be remembered for her love for all Indians #IndiasIndira,” the Congress posted on its twitter.

She became a member of Rajya Sabha in August 1964 and served till February 1967. She was the part of Lok Sabha amid fourth, fifth and 6th sessions. Months after she ordered Operation Bluestar, in which the armed force raged the Golden Temple in Amritsar, one of the holiest Sikh holy places, to expel separatists hiding inside, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards on October 31, 1984.
