The Ministry Of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has directed Google and Apple to remove the app from their respective app stores to stop further download. Following the Madras High Court’s order, TikTok had reached out to Supreme Court for withholding the ban, but the appeal was rejected on 15 April on grounds that the matter was subjudice.
TikTok app is no longer listed on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. However, the apps can still be downloaded from Apk Mirror and Apkpure. This app was launched in India in 2018, TikTok has 120 million plus active users and 240 million plus downloads in India. It was introduced to make creative short videos but TikTok has been accused of encouraging pornography. The banned is ineffective because even if the app is banned, people can still download it from other sources or by changing their location. It will not impact existing users and people can still download it and get updates of the app. The main question is the ban useful?
Prem Vats, crown user from Delhi said, “There are so many apps who are spreading pornographic contents on social media including YouTube trending section. I am not at all happy with the ban. Our government has banned porn sites already but in vain people are still watching it. There are so many serious issues in our country but our government is making this issue too big”.
Aman Sanjiv Puri, crown Tiktok user from Mumbai said, “While Tiktok had been an app which gives platform for amazing creativity, there have been people who have used it to upload and troll with inappropriate content. Although ban is way too extreme, It is matter of huge concern how it affecting small individual minds“.
Abdul Rehman, Tiktok user from Punjab said, “Tiktok should not be ban because it has given me freedom to be creative and has given me platform to showcase my talent. The policies should be strict so that there will be no pornographic videos. Tiktok is source of income to many too”.
Karan Shahh, another Tiktok user from Dadar said, “I think Tiktok ban is a good move because youngsters who are users of the app have started making videos on roads which is very risky”.
It will be interesting to see what will be the next step by government on this issue.
