With the expanding number of coronavirus cases in Mumbai, the railway authorities have suspended the local and outstation trains till March 31. The local trains are considered as the lifesaver of Mumbai as over 80 lakh people travel in them everyday. The Central and the Western Railway operate over 3,000 services on rural routes daily.

A railway spokesperson said, “All the suburban services have been stopped from Sunday midnight till March 31.” All passenger train services on Indian Railways including Premium trains, Mail/Express trains, Passenger trains, Suburban Trains have been cancelled from Sunday midnight.

Domestic airlines cease with effect from tomorrow midnight

Operations of domestic scheduled commercial airlines shall cease with effect from midnight on March 24. The restrictions shall not apply to cargo flights. After the closure of buses and trains, all domestic flights from midnight on March 24 have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has claimed 15,303 lives and infected 349,676 people globally. However, these restrictions will not apply to cargo flights.

The Ministry said, “Airlines have to plan operations to land at their destination before 2359 hours on 24/3/2020.” Meanwhile, 433 confirmed cases reported so far and 9 deaths reported. He included that a total lockdown has been reported in 19 states and union territories. Some parts of 6 states and union territories have been kept beneath lockdown.

The CM said “Yesterday we sealed the state borders and today we are sealing district borders. We will not allow it to spread to the districts which are unaffected as of now.”  Essentials like groceries, milk, bakery, medical etc will remain open. People need not panic. All religious places will remain closed. Only the priests and clerics alone will be inside and pray,” said Thackeray.
