Tanmay Arvind Best Debator
Mumbai: Tanmay Arvind and Siddharth Wagle of Bombay Scottish (Mahim) won the 1st Counter Encounter 2019 inter ICSE schools panel debate competition organized by Queen Mary High School in Grant Road (W), here on November 23, 24 and 29, 2019.
Advay Matapurkar and Aarav Patel of Arya Mandir (Juhu) bagged the 2nd prize. Vedant Rathod and Nysa Joshi of St. Gregarious (Chembur) emerged 1st runner up and Ananya Gurunath Kadam and Sahitya Krishna Pal of Thakur International School (Kandivli) bagged the 2nd runner up trophy.
Tanmay Arvind bagged the best debator trophy among the 22 contestants from 11 schools on the 1st day of the competition on November 23. Ali Mohamad Lakdawalla won the best debator trophy among 24 contestants from 12 schools on the 2nd day on November 24. Tanmay Arvind was declared the best debator among the 20 finalists from 10 schools on the final day on November 29.
The jury for the finals comprised of Dr. Sarla Bijapurkar, retired professor Somaiya College, Vishwarath Nayar, editor Raigad Observer, Monica Naithani, assistant general manager and head – Times NIE – Mumbai and Amishi Seth, scriptwriter for films, plays, animation shows, novelist, director and creative trainer.
Dr. Sarla Bijapurkar and Vishwarath Nayar were on the jury on all 3 days of the competition. Dr. Joycia Thorat, a firebrand civil society activist for women issues, the marginalized and the environment and Ms. Lubaina Tyebji Bandukwala, organizer of Children’s literature and story telling festivals (Peek a Book) were also on the jury on the 1st day and Minal Savia, teacher of special skills and Advocate Amar Patil were also on the jury on the 2nd day.
Principal Grace Mathais, ably supported by vice principals Mrs. M. Juhari and Mrs. D. Kujur and their entire team of teachers, staff and student leaders conducted an excellent panel debate, which Principal Mathais stated was initiated by the school trust’s chairman Dr. David. She announced that from next year a rotating trophy, with the name of the champions engraved on it every year, will be instituted for the event.
Queen Mary High School is among the oldest schools in Mumbai, founded in 1895 under the management of the Christian Medical Educational Fellowship Trust affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations that conducts the I. C. S. E. Board examinations.
