The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Maharashtra heavily banks on Modi magic and split in opposition parties especially after Prakash Ambedkar led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi’s (VBA) decision to not to join with Congress and Nationalist Congress Party promoted Mahagatbandhan. BJP is aggressively taking up with voters Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clean image, strong leadership, corruption free government and above all his sabka saath sabka saath vikas plank. BJP is also exposing the differences between Congress and NCP despite their loud claims over alliance to take on BJP.
On the other hand, Modi as well as the state chief minister Devendra Fadnavis are reiterating in their poll rallies how the Mahagathbandhan is ”Mahamilavat” (combination of opportunists) and the voters should vote for ”Majboot” sarkar. BJP is focusing on a slew of decisions taken by the BJP led NDA government at the Centre including Ujala, Ujwala, Jan Dhan Yojana, Modi care, insurance scheme for farmers, demonetization, GST, surgical and air strikes against Pakistan and PM Kisan Samman yojana. BJP believes that Modi, whose popularity remains high compared with other leaders, will be able to turn the votes in the party’s favour despite opposition’s attempt to corner the party on the issues relating to anti incumbency, farm distress, slow pace of economic growth and slide in industrial production and alleged polarisation. In addition, the BJP and Chief Minister Fadnavis are also projecting the state government’s schemes including the Rs 34,000 crore loan waiver, relief to drought hit villages, infrastructure development.
Modi in the first round of polling has already held rallies in the state and he is expected to address more till the last round of polling which is slated for April 29. Modi has been attacking NCP chief Sharad Pawar in particular in his speeches while exposing opposition for their anti Modi ever. Modi has been terming opposition Tukde Tukde gang which may allegedly pursue division of the country. He assures the voters that the BJP led government at the Centre will foil such attempts in order to maintain unity and integrity of the nation.
Interestingly, Fadnavis, who is Modi’s close confidant, has been touring extensively riding on Modi magic. Fadnavis is also following his mentor to take on Pawar, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, state Congress unit chief Ashok Chavan and many more with an appeal to voters that Modi led government at the Centre is the need of hour to spur development and protection of India’s borders.
Similarly, BJP’s ally Shiv Sena, which was until recently criticising Modi, Fadnavis and the governments at the Centre and in Maharashtra, is making a strong case for the need of Modi led government for India. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has for a moment has kept aside his demand for the construction of Ram temple but insisting that Modi’s able and strong leadership will help country to scame new high in the economic growth and avoid balkanisation of the country.
BJP and Shiv Sena with Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) together had won a record 42 of the 48 seats in 2014 general election. Although SSS has joined the Mahagatbandhan, Fadnavis aims to fulfill the target of 45 seats set by the BJP’s national president Amit Shah for Mahayuti to win in Maharashtra. It will be known on May 23 when the counting is slated.
