Navi Mumbai: 6285 household idols and 153 public mandals’ idols of Lord Ganesha were immersed in the 23 traditional immersion spots in the city and 195 artificial ponds erected by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation on the 2nd day of the 10-days public Ganeshutsav celebrations.

3185 household idols and 28 public idols were immersed on the 2nd day in the 23 traditional immersion locations and these included 824 household and 6 public idols in the 5 traditional immersion spots in Belapur ward, 650 household and 4 public in 3 spots in Nerul ward, 330 household and 2 public in 2 spots in Vashi, 241 houshold and 3 public in 3 spots in Turbhe ward, 23 household in 2 spots in Koparkhairne ward, 699 household and 5 public in 4 spots in Ghansoli ward, 415 household and 2 public in 3 spots in Airoli ward and 3 household and 6 public in 1 spot in Digha ward.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, NMMC prepared 135 artificial ponds all over the city to avoid crowding and maintaining social distancing during the immersion of the idols for the festival in the city, which evoked good response from the citizens. 3100 household Lord Ganesha idols and 125 public Ganeshutsav mandal’s idols were immersed in these ponds on the 2nd day, which included, 347 household and 7 public idols were immersed in 15 artificial ponds in Belapur ward, 348 household and 2 public idols in 27 ponds in Nerul ward, 387 household and 11 public idols in 16 ponds in Vashi ward, 318 household and 20 public idols in 17 ponds in Turbhe ward, 746 household and 30 public idols in 14 ponds in Koparkhairne, 372 household and 18 public idols in 17 ponds in Ghansoli, 391 household and 17 public idols in 22 ponds in Airoli and 191 household and 20 public in 7 ponds in Digha.

14 ponds out of the 23 traditional immersion locations have Gabion wall enclosures for immersions that ensure protection from polluting the entire pond and conserving the environment. The corporation has provided bamboo barricading in all locations to avoid crowding, life-guards, volunteers and fire brigade personnel at the immersion locations, as also a forklift facility where required to facilitate the immersion of the idols, electricity supply and alternative arrangement of generators in the main locations, drinking water and first aid facility at all the locations. Separate containers for disposal of dry and wet floral and worship materials disposables are provided in all locations with arrangements to cart these disposables for processing at the Turbhe unit to maintain the sanctity of these. Adequate police personnel were also deputed at these locations to ensure proper security.
